Band Name and Logo

For our band name we have decided on Raw Rebellion. This struck us as a name that would work for our band.
This our band logo. The black and white represents the band as a rock band, it lets people, who dont know much about the band, know what to expect before they even listen to the music. We have represented the bands name in the centre of our shield.
The lions in this logo represent a wild side to our band and the combination of the lion and the shield is used to represent dominance. The font we chose for the RR in the middle of our shield was chosen to represent a rock look about our bands logo, we have wildness and dominance and we had to round them together to have a rock feel to it all.

Equipment and Technology used

Making our music Video

To collect all our footage we will need to use video cameras that college will provide.
When we have all of our footage we will have to use Final Cut Express to edit the footage and piece our final product together. This program allows us to put all our scenes and footage into an order that we want, this is also were we add the sound to the video as well.

Ancillary tasks
When we are doing our ancillary tasks i will need a still camera to get my shots of the band in the adverts and the digipack.
The camera we will use is a Nikon D300 10.2 mp camera.

When we have taken these pictures we will have to use more programs on the computers to make the images exactly how we want them.
To get the actual image we want we will use 2 programs.
Photoshop will be used first to get the image exactly how we want it. If we need to crop, cut or change the lighting of the image.

Once we have finished getting our image, getting it exactly how we want it in terms of lighting and any other editing we need to do we will move onto InDesign. This will allow us to put different backgrounds on if we need to, and add the text that we will need to finalize our digipack and our album advert.

Storyboard

These are the two rough drawings of what are music video was going to be like. When it came to filming it gave us a good idea of what shots to film and from what angles. Also it helped us during the editing because we already had a good idea what order we wanted the shots to go in and for when and how long.

Music and Lyrics

I've been here before a few times
And I'm quite aware we're dying
And your hands they shake with goodbyes
And I'll take you back if you'd have me
So here I am I'm trying
So here I am are you ready

Come on let me hold you touch you feel you
Always
Kiss you taste you all night
Always

And I'll miss your laugh your smile
I'll admit I'm wrong if you'd tell me
I'm so sick of fights I hate them
Lets start this again for real

So here I am I'm trying
So here I am are you ready
So here I am I'm trying
So here I am are you ready

Come on let me hold you touch you feel you
Always
Kiss you taste you all night
Always
Come on let me hold you touch you feel you
Always
Kiss you taste you all night
Always

I've been here before a few times
And I'm quite aware we're dying

Come on let me hold you touch you feel you
Always
Kiss you taste you all night
Always
Come on let me hold you touch you feel you
Always
Kiss you taste you all night
Always
Always
Always

Synopsis

For our video we want to shoot a performance and also a narrative then merge the two together. We think by having both it makes the video more interesting and the audience are less likely to get bored if it was all performance or narrative. We will have a three man band just like Blink 182 then we will also have a couple for the narrative. The band will obviously be playing the song and the characters in the narrative will be acting. We hope to film the performance from a variety of angles and heights so we have a vast array to choose from. For the narrative we were thinking about a couple that fall out because thats what the song is based on plus we hope to create flashbacks of the arguing in the past. We also have some ideas for editing such as slow motion, someone receives a text and violently throws their phone but it flys in slow motion.

Introduction to Planning

We have now completed our research into our genre and videos we will now move on to the planning of our own video. By planning what we hope to do now we will be organised when it comes to the filming, we will know what we want to shoot and what we don't but in the editing some things may change, like the order of shots for example. But by planning we want leave everything until the last minute and we will be prepared for recording.

Due to the company wanting us to pay we decided to change the song to Always by Blink 182.

Institution

Our music would be owned by a major label because it is mainstream and it has already been done. it would be owned by a major label like the Universal Music Group. The Universal Music Group cover a lot of different music genres so there isn't a need to add any features to make it stand out as a Universal Music Group product.

Reflection on branding

Through looking into the branding of an artist in my chosen genre which is rock  i have learnt that it is very important how a band gets themselves represented by the public. When i looked into kasabian I found that they are very popular because they are very spontaneous, which means that when we come to portray our artist we cant make eveything predictale, something that catches peoples eyes, or simply makes them thnik twice about will have to be included in my music video and the print projects.

When thinking about branding i have found that it is very important to let the audience know what genre you are, this is so the audience know what to expect from the artist. It is also important to keep certain things the same. Kasabians album covers and music style changed constantly but the Logo is clear on every album cover, this is because it is simply the name Kasabian but in there own special font that has now become linked with the band.

As you can see from both these album covers, the logo appears across both of the images, this font for the logo is closelyt linked with the band so whenever you see it used you know who it is.
For my artist i would have to keep something the same all the way through so it becomes easy to recognise the artist through this small or large feature that is recurring where ever you see the band.

Branding is very importand for a band because it creates a sense of undserstanding with the audience. Kasabian are branded as a gereally honest band who do it because they love music and what they do for a living. Because of this they never sell out and fans respect them for this, they also give the audience a good idea of what is going to be oin the album from a simple picture.

Analysis of branding

Analysis of branding

Branding and how it applies to our product

Brand: a type of product manufactured by a company under a particular name. In terms of music the brand is the artist, the artists sells because of the familiarity with the audience. The artist is the brand identity that the audience associates with, for example if they like a particular artist they will dress/act like them. The audience alter their way of life to be more like the brand. It is also a good way of indicating what genre the music is by advertising the brand by using the band in the videos and other promotional products. By including the band in the music video the music video will sell.

Reflection of audience and appeal

We have got some positive feedback from our survey, we found out that the majority of our audience did prefer the rock music genre and liked rock music videos so our music video will be mainstream. After looking at who our audience will be and completely defining them it has made it easier on coming up with ideas for our video. We need to make our video suitable for our audience by including things that the audience will relate to. In our video we plan to use both narrative and editing and our narrative will follow a character (who is a representation of the audience) through out the video, plus there will be shots of the band performing. By making the video appeal to the audience it means it will get a lot of views because it will hopefully be liked and passed on to others.

Understanding our audience

A positive sign is that more people said that they like the genre Rock. This links in with the viable audience post that shows that rock is a popular genre.

This pie chart shows that out of the 5 options we gave the rock artists came out the most popular. Kasabian took it away with the mosy people choosing them. Then QOTSA came second which is a positive sign because this is the song that are msuic video is being made for is by them.
This graph is useful for the viable audience post because it shows that more people purchase music regularly.

This is a line graph that just shows that everyone we surveyed likes music videos. And the main reason was because they like having something to watch that is relevant to the song they are listening to.

Is it a viable commercial audience?

Rock isnt always a genre that you will hear on the radio, or even see in the charts very often. This is because it isnt classed as mainstream music anymore. This however, doesnt mean that it isnt popular. It has a very loyal growing audience that tend to stick away from chart music and live for rock. All rock artists will have a very loyal follwoing, fans who will be willing to travel to watch them live in concert. There are channels on tele such as NME, Scuzz,MTV Rocks,Q and Kerrang which are all showing rock music throughout the day , this is because there is still a wide audience of people who follow rock music religiously. There are evem magazines such as NME,Q and Kerrang which sell an enormous amount because there fans are loyal and will happily buy these magazines every week/month.
In the current top 40 album charts there are 3 rock bands inside the top 10.
You Me At Six's album Sinners never Sleep currently stand in 3rd place
Kasabian's album velociraptor currently stand in 6th place
Nirvana's album Nevermind  an album which was first released in 1991 - 20 years ago, and the band split after Kurt Cobains death in 1994, currently lie is 10th place.

This shows that rock has a very viable audience who will go out and buy or simply download the music that they love. When Nirvana were together they sold over 50 million albums worldwide, so this genre has a very big following. Also bands like Metallica, who brought out a self titled album that did 15 times platinum. This clearly shows that rock is a very viable genre with a loyal audience.

Target audience for our media product

The target audience for our pieces will mainly be males aged 18-30 because general statistics show that male readers (most of which being young or middle aged adults) tend to buy rock magazines compared to females since 16% of average rock magazine sales are from women where as the other 84% are men. Plus rock music is generally viewed as a more masculine type of music because most rock bands/artists are male. It could be heard by any race but usually with rock music it tends to be white people and their socio-economic status would range from C1 to D on the scale, from manual workers to lower middle class people. The music featured in our video is quite mainstream so i think it would appeal to mainstreamers.

Analysis of Digipaks from our chosen genre

As well as the music video we have to produce a digipak. A digipak is the album art, the front cover, back cover and inside panels. The digipak usually includes an image of the band/artist and is usually a colour that represents the genre with another colour for the text that stand out against it.

Digipaks are the covers and insides of albums, they help sell the album by making it look attractive in different ways. The digipak above is for Michael Jackson's This is it. The overall colour is white but the there is an outline of the artist who is filled in with scenes from the tour which is brightly coloured.
This could be a way of reveiling more about the artist like their personality for example. This digipak could be aimed at anyone because its suitable, theres nothing making it just for adults or just a younger generation. I think our digipak will be quite different to this one because it is of a different genre so most aspects will be different for example the colour, ours will most likely be dark/dull in colour plus it will be aimed at an older audience.

This digipak is more likely to resemble ours because it is of the rock genre. I like this digipak because it features the band just like their music videos do plus it features all the right colours, black white and red. The type is big, bold and gold in a graffiti-ish way contrasting with the rest of the cover so it stands out. Plus there is a warning in the corner for explicit content which shows that this is more suitable for an older audience.

When it comes to making our own we will refer back to this for ideas on our own. Obviously we will focus more on the bottom one because it relates to our genre and ours will hopefully do what this one does.

Analysis of Adverts for music in the genre

As well as our music video in this project we will produce an advert for the album. To do this i am looking at past adverts that will hopefully give me some ideas as to what i want to with my advert.

This is an advert for The Stone Roses album that has been remastered for the its 20th anniversary. It has features that you would expect from an advert, it has ratings and quotes from different respected magazines and newspapers. it shows the original album cover from 20 years ago in the advert.

On the album cover it shows 3 painted rectangles in the order Red,white, blue.
And this theme is continued throughout the advert. The quote from all of the reviewers is in red at the top, then the rating in white in the middle, and then what newspaper or magazine in bluer at the bottom. This is very effective in this advert.

This is an advertising poster for Alter Bridge. This is a different advertising poster because it is advertising a new album rather than a new tour. They keep with the conventions of a rock band with them all being dressed in black and wearing jeans. Also Tattoos are connected with this genre of music because it shows a rebellious side of the band as most rock bands have. It shows a regular 4 piece band all looking at the camera, no sense of a smile, just shows they mean business. They have kept the same font for ALTER BRIDGE throughout their career so people immediately know who it is and can relate it straight to them.

This is an advert for a Kings Of Leon album. It shows the album cover as the main image for this advert. it also has tracks that are featured on this album and the release date as well.

By looking at these adverts it has given me a good understanding of what i want to do when i have to produce an advert. I want to keep a colour coordination right throughout the advert. I also want to have the genre colours which are dark colours like black and navy.

Reflection on our music genre

After analysing different artists and music videos it has given us a good idea about what our artist should be portrayed like. We looked into artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and Blink 182. Both of these artists are quite typical in terms of what you expect from a rock band. They both are full of energy and charisma when they perform and are very serious about their music, whilst they are very serious, their videos and what they do when they arent performing shows they love to have a fun and dont take life as serious as their music.

In terms of charactersistics, we found that the rock bands we looked at possessed alot of the same charactersistics.
They even have the same tendencies when it comes to pictures, they seem to both like to pose with their tops off, to show off their tattoos which is another charactersistic that you expect to see when you think of a rock band.

Both of these artists are shown in these pictures posing as a 3 piece band, all with their tops off, but the red hot chilis are posing completely naked, which just shows their eccentricity and rebelliousness.
Every member of these 2 bands is showing off many tattoos, most rock artists around seem to have tattoos of some kind, this is just something you expect to see when you think about rock artists now.

As for Music videos. In this genre many of the videos are just made through creativity with the editing being the most important thing. They go against Goodwins six points, but still they manage to have incredibly popular videos.  Red Hot Chili Peppers have many crative videos that they have brought out. The video for the song Californication the whole video is just like a video game, it is all set out like a cartoon/video game, it even has points and everything on it. This is effective because when i watch this video i can never take my eyes of it, it just grabs you in . There are also videos like By the way and Can't Stop. The videos for these songs are very random but very effective. It features the whole band in every video they have and it shows them as just being naturally funny artists with bag fulls of charisma.

Analysis of artists in our chosen genre

Our music video genre

The song we have chosen is Go with the flow by Queens Of The Stone Age which is of the rock genre. So for our video we hope to get clips of the band performing but also focus on editing because rock music videos tend to use either one or the other or both.

Reflection of research into music video format

Whilst anyalysing these music videos, it has helped us as a valuable part of out research into what we want to do with our music video. A lot of how the music video should look is based on genre. Many of the indie music videos feature the artist in the video at some point, no matter how long they are in it for. We also looked into the importance of Goodwin's six points in a music video. It is vital to have some genre characteristics included, this is because fans of certain genres already know what they expect to see when they watch a music video from that genre. For the genre we are doing which is rock The characteristics usually needed are the artist featuring and there to be instruments included; some sort of performance.
A music video can be a success without followung most of Goodwins points as long as it is creative. Music videos such as the ones that  The White Stripes produce for their songs Seven Nation Army and Hardest Button to Button dont go along with all of goodwins points. The visuals dont match the lyrics, and there is no intertextuality . There is no narrative but the video to Hardest Button to Button is so cleverly edited, with every drumbeat the drums that Meg White is playing move along the street making a track of drumsets. This sort of creativity
keeps people wanting to watch this video because of
how much work has gone into it, not because of some sort of narrative. For our music video we would like to have some sort of narrative with enough creativity and editing to make it a success and make people want to keep watching it.

Initial Ideas

The song we are hoping to use is Go with the flow by Queens of the stone age. We have emailed Universal Music and we are now waiting for a reply giving us permission to use the song.

Introduction

We are Neil and Danny and we hope to create a music promotion package. We are going to create a music video followed by its digipack art and also a music magazine advert. The genre we want to look at is rock and we hope to be able to use the song Go with the flow by Queens of the stone age.
Last year We both created a music magazine for our production in AS media studies. The production phase will help us to create an effective music magazine advert, and digipack.
